The Creative Genius of the Dream-Mind...
(c) 1998 1870 words
by: Janice Baylis, Ph.D.
This article will deal with only one aspect of dreaming, CREATIVITY,
which is the making of something new. Creativity is only one thing
that dreams facilitate, there are other equally important aspects
to dreams.
Nobel Prize Winning Dreams
Niels Bohr, Danish physicist and Nobel Laureate, discovered that
atomic structure resembles a solar system. The Bohr Atomic Model
first revealed to mankind the atomic nucleus surrounded by orbiting
electrons much like the sun surrounded by orbiting planets. Where
did Neils Bohr get this realization? He often related that it
was in a dream where he saw a visualization of the intra-atomic
arrangement. He stated that in a dream he witnessed, the superhuman
showmanship of elementary particles with the electrons speeding
around the nuclei in their orbital paths. He was awarded the 1922
Nobel Prize in Physics.
Otto Lowei had his Nobel Prize dream three nights in succession.
While studying the human nervous system he dreamed of an experiment
with two frogs. He scribbled notes about the dream experiment
in the dark. Next morning he couldnt read the notes and couldnt
remember the dream. The second night he had the same experience.
When the dream returned the third night he got out of bed, went
to his laboratory and performed the experiment as he had dreamed
it.
He electronically activated the heart nerve of one frog. A small
amount of chemical formed on the nerve ending. Lowei transferred
this chemical to the heart nerve of a second frog. That frogs
nerve responded to the chemical by sending an impulse. Based on
this experiment and proof that nerve impulses are transmitted
chemically as well as electrically, Otto Lowei received the 1936
Nobel Prize in physiology. Later the chemical was identified as
acetycholine, the first neuro-transmitter to be discovered.
Yet another Nobel Prize winner, the chemist Fredrick Kekule, credited
his breakthrough insight to a dream experience. He told the story
of one important dream he had when he fell asleep on a London
omnibus..
- I saw atoms flicker. I always imagined them as eternally
moving, but I had never been able to visualize their way of
motion and relative arrangement. However, I saw two of
them forming a pair, two of these pairs forming a larger
unit which in turn combined again into ever larger units,
all of them rushing and turning. I awoke.
That evening he sketched the images which had appeared to him
in his dream and the theory of closed atom chains was born.
A second dream which Kekule had while studying to determine the
structure of the benzene molecule he reported this way.
- I was writing in my notebook, but my work appeared
unsatisfactory. I just turned the chair around and drifted
into a half-sleep My mental eyes were able to perceive
large manifold structures. Long rows, tightly knit, all in
motion like a snake, turning and twisting and, Lo! What is that?
One of the snakes got hold of its own tail and scornfully rolled
about in front of my eyes. The benzene ring! I spent the
balance of the night working out my hypothesis based on
this dream experience.
In reporting his discovery to a scientific congress Kekule said,
Let us learn to dream gentlemen, then perhaps we shall learn
the truth.
Dream Artistic Creativity
Robert Louis Stevenson was working on a story to depict the dual
nature of the human psyche. In psychological terms the Persona
and the Shadow. He submitted a manuscript but his publisher rejected
it. Two nights after the rejection Stevenson dreamed the central
plot and three scenes of his now famous Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll
and Mr. Hyde.
Jean Depre, French painter of Pieta, reported this dream experience.
While thinking about exactly where to position the figure of
Christ, I fell asleep. In a dream I saw the composition and placement
of the entire grouping of Christ and the disciples. His famous
painting reproduces the image as seen in his dream.
Anton Rubensteins Third Piano Concerto is his musical rendition
of a visual dream experience.
Here is his report.
- I found myself in a temple where the various instruments
of an orchestra seemed to have gathered, with the piano
contributing seriously. The orchestral instruments subjected
the piano to a difficult examination and they forced him to
play different melodies and accords; then they announced in a
fiery tone that the piano cannot be considered as being one
of them any more. The deep tones of the piano seized upon
this occasion and began to cry bitterly. Then the piano collected
itself bravely, declaring that it was going to create for itself
its own orchestra. This statement made the other instruments
so angry that they pushed the piano out of the door.
Genius of the Common Man
Here is the report of a classroom teacher who dreamed an effective
way to teach the paychological meaning of fairy tales.
- I was looking through a book. The pages were divided
in half horizontally. The top half told and illustrated the
story symbolically as it would appear in any book.
The bottom half told and illustrated the story as it would
appear if interpreted into its real psychological meaning.
-
- The teacher tried this and it worked out very well for getting
the students to understand how
to interpret the symbology of fairy tales.
An interior decorator reported this dream experience which led
to the development of a unique element to individualize her designs.
I saw some display windows in homes and offices.
Each window was designed to express the personality,
occupation or special interest/hobby of the occupant.
In detail one showed a scope and sequence flow chart in
colors on the glass. The other was for a skier. I realized
in the dream that this design should cover 20 to 40% of
the window and leave 60 to 80% blank to let in light.
The more area the design covered the more white was needed
in the design. Some of the window designs had three-
dimensional elements.
Soon word-of-month praise was bringing her lots of requests for
her individualized window designs.
Business Creativity in Dreams
Mrs. Pansy Essman literally dreamed up a thriving business. She
and her daughter got soaked giving the newborn granddaughter her
first bath. The water seemed to terrify Baby Letha. That night
Graandmother Pansy dreamed.
-
- I dreamed about bathing a baby. I dreamed I went to my
closet and pulled out a pillow-like piece of sponge that
conformed to the shape of the babys body. I placed the
baby in it and bathed her. She laughed and splashed and
her bath was a pleasure. The dream was so vivid I woke
and realized that I had found the answer to the problem
many mothers have with newborns.
Six months later Mrs. Essman had found the right non-allergenic
sponge, in bright colors.
She became president of Pansy Ellen Products and was manufacturing
20,000 baby bath aids per month. Pretty creative and practical
dream guidance Id say. Dont you agree?
Blue paint was always a problem because it tended to fade. Carl
Duisberg was the director of IG-Farben Co. manufacturers of paint.
One day he fell asleep at his desk. His secretary came in and
woke him to go to an important meeting. Before he left he told
the secretary what he had been dreaming, a new process for making
blue paint pigment. That afternoon he called an impromptu meeting
of the company chemists and told them the details of the dream.
The result after testing was a new fade resistant blue paint which
became a big money-maker for the company.
Sometimes good business guidance concerns what not to do. Millies
dream is such an example. Millie was a widow living in California.
Soon after her husband died Millie was wondering how best to invest
the insurance money to provide for her for the rest of her life.
Having seen many fortunes made in California real estate she began
to think about investing in land. While reading a magazine one
day an advertisment for land in Australia caught Millies eye.
She met with the salesman and listened to his sales pitch. He
explained that this was land on the western side of Australia.
It was presently in wheat fields. He mentioned that western Australia
was the fastest growing area and the farm land would soon be subdivided
for homes. He claimed they were echoing our pioneer slogan, Go
West young man, Go West. Last he told about their leverage system
whereby a group of people each put in a small portion of the capital
and combined it to create big buying power.
It sounded very logical and interesting to Millie. But, Millie
was an accomplished dream incubator. She told the salesman she
wanted to sleep on it, and would let him know soon.
Millie knew how to form a question for her dream-mind to work
on. That night, while it was fresh and top priority on her mind,
Millie asked her dreams to comment on this Australian land investment.
Millie dreamed she was looking at a vast stretch of wheat fields.
A tree grew up in the middle of the field. A hand appeared and
began picking peanuts off the tree.
She woke up and wrote the dream in her journal. She got the message
easily. The growth there would only yield peanuts, a slang expression
for not very much money. But Millie had a second dream that night.
-
- I watched a man I know, Mr. Myers, give a bundle of money
to a boy I know, Jerry West. Mr. Myers told Jerry West to take
the money to an office. On the way to make the delivery a gang
of big boys jumped him and took most of the money. He arrived
at the office with only a small amount of money.
Millie knew dreams play with words and make puns sometimes so
she recognized Mr. Myers as a visual for my ears. It had sounded
good and Millie had thought my ears tell me to give them the
money. To let it Go West young man as pictured by Jerry West in
the dream. But, look what happened in the dream. Some Big Boys
took most of the money! Millie told the salesman No Thanks.
A couple of weeks later Millie met a realtor at a party and mentioned
the deal to him. He explained that in those leverage deals the
company men, The Big Boys take most of the profit and leave
the individual investors with only a little, Peanuts!
These dream experiences illustrate how dream-mind can offer creative
ideas and important information to help the dreamer in their daily
life. You wouldnt toss 10% of your money into the trash, especially
if it was interest bearing money. I urge you to monitor and record
and use your dreams, Dont toss away some of the best 10% of your
thinking!
